Chief Business Officer, Cile Johnson, sits down to answer all your frequently asked questions about the Diversity Impact Awards.

The Diversity Impact Awards are the next iteration of the ERG and Councils Honors Award. After Talent Dimensions acquired PRISM International in 2018, the awards were revamped and updated. The awards program now uses Dr. Theresa Welbourne’s Diversity Impact Model as part of the application process. The awards have also been updated to reflect the work ERGs and Councils are doing today with:

  • Top 25 ERGs (single)
  • Top 10 Enterprise-Wide ERGs (an organization’s overall ERG program)
  • Top 10 Diversity Action (organizational initiatives not taken by an ERG or Council)
  • Executive Sponsor of the Year

The impact model is a lens for studying how a diversity intervention works in an organization. It is based on years of research interviewing executives about the key outcomes they are seeking from diversity programs, learning from prior competitions and working from a long-term research study conducted by Dr. Theresa M. Welbourne. Her research has been done with employees in hundreds of companies around the world.

The model focuses on the domain areas where executives are seeking improvement (talent management, culture and vitality, which focuses on forward movement, momentum, improvement and growth). These outcomes are then considered from three perspectives, having a positive impact on individuals, the organization overall, and external stakeholders.

By integrating the extensive years of experience from prior competitions with a scientifically validated model, the new awards program will provide all participants with a more robust data-driven experience and outcomes that they can share with senior executives and ERG members. Additionally, the new awards program moves from 25 awards to a total of 45 awards, providing additional learning, examples and opportunities.

Our partnership with University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, Center for Effective Organizations (CEO) has added a new level of rigor to the Diversity Impact Awards. By leveraging a validated, highly-reliable model to measure the success of initiatives, it provides the awards process with more objectivity.

The Diversity Impact Awards (originally the ERG and Councils Honors Award) was the first, and for a long time the only, award designed specifically to honor ERGs, BRGs, Diversity Councils and Affinity Networks. The Diversity Impact Awards are powered by Talent Dimensions and the Global ERG Network, and we have been aiding organizations in DE&I work for almost 30 years. Also, the Diversity Impact Awards application is free.

They are critical to the success of an organization’s DE&I initiatives. Councils have strategic oversight of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and ERGs do the work. They are a critical execution lever an organization can pull. The execution, strategy, councils and ERGs must be aligned with the overall business strategy as well.

Participating in an ERG or Diversity Council is one of the greatest professional development opportunities individuals can take. There is a lot of exposure to executives and other leaders and leadership opportunities for those who may not hold a formal leadership roll within an organization. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to shape the future of the organization and help work to make it a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.

We like to think about diversity as differences and similarities that people bring to the workplace and that we experience in the marketplace. It encompasses a much broader range than what we thought about just a few years ago.

In the last few years we have seen an explosion in the impact ERGs are making on their community. From trying to help with health outcomes or providing new opportunities in schools, ERGs and Councils are working to make their internal and external communities a better place.

The Diversity Impact Awards is a free opportunity to assess where you are, think about where you want to go and benchmark yourself against other best-in-class organizations. By participating in the Diversity Impact Awards every year, you will be able to track your progress and continue to increase the effectiveness and impact of your group. Plus, a little global recognition for your work doesn’t hurt!

It’s simple! The Diversity Impact Awards is a short 3-step process that you can start right now. Just click here, or find ‘Application’ in the Diversity Impact Awards menu above.
